For Those of You Who Need To Know

We went to get William and Marissa their passports several weeks ago. I brought in their Texas birth certificates, social security cards, Uganda passports, the adoption decree from the USA courts, and their permanent resident cards. The woman repeatedly assured me that all she needed was the adoption decree and birth certificates. THIS IS NOT TRUE. You MUST also send in proof that they entered the US legally. This means the Uganda passport with the Visa or the permanent resident card, must be included as well. If you have already filed for and received the certificate of citizenship, that that will work too. It is not a big deal, just a delay in us receiving the passports. I just though I would post so if anyone will be doing this anytime soon, your family can avoid the delay.

Why do they need passports?

Shara, they need passports because this stands as proof that they are US citizens rather than the permanent legal residents they arrived as. We still need to get their certificate of citizenship, but we are waiting to see if some lobbying to get this changed will go through. It is absolutely wrong that we should have to pay an additional $420 for each child, to get a piece of paper, when according to the law they are citizens. Kids that come home on different visas don't have to do this...they get it automatically...for free. Some people are trying to get the laws changed so that ALL adopted children have the same rights as biological children. We are hoping for that, because we don't want o give another dime to the USCIS if we don't have too.

Rest assured we have no plans to leave the country...well at least I don't think we do :)
